Political participation is an important act every eligible citizen of a country is expected to be involved in, in order to ensure the development of such country with no form of gender discrimination. However, diversity in social, political and cultural situations in each country of the world has led to variation in women’s political participation. In spite of this, there is one common feature to women’s political experiences across the world and this is in the aspect of politics which seems to be reserved for men alone. Nigeria as a nation is not exempted from this. The study examine what political participation is, what women political participation is, the role of women right from the pre-colonial era to post colonial era and those factors that hinder women from participating beyond voting during election which has resulted into underrepresentation of women in politics in Nigeria.
