Abstract
ABSTf~ACT: Crude cold- and warm-water extracts frorn B;)(:r!uwvia tiJjjilsu leaves were administered on
120 males, 150 non-menstruating females, and 30 menstruating female students of Ogun State University,
Ago-Iwoyc. 218 other pregnant women were also tested with the extracts at the Maternity Health Clinic,
Ago-Iwoyc, Nigeria. The males and non-pregnant women were not sensitized by the B. diffusa/ leaf
extracts, but all the pregnant wonmcn were sensitizcd with varied intensitics of itching allergic I
reactions. The duration and intensity of the itching varied from a few seconds to three or four minutes
depending on the age of pregnancy, I
The, intensity of reaction to warm-water leaf extracts. was negatively correlated ro increase in gestation I
age, indicating possible reaction with human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) whieh the trophoblast produces
in large quantities in the first trimester of pregnancy. On the other hand, the intensity of reaction to the
cold-water leaf extract was positively correlated with the age of pregnancy, suggesting that its chcmical
content was reacting with progesterone and oestriol hormones.
The itching allergy was attributed to the glycoprotein content of B.ditffusa which operated as a biochemical
interference factor that reacted with some gonadotrophin or with some gonadotrophin-induced embryonic I
