Abstract
This paper examines the dimensions of poverty from the perspective of a variety of indicators, specifically, the trend of poverty encroachment to development in Nigeria from 1980 to 2007, the levels of income and consumption, social indicators, indicators of ‘vulnerability to risks and finally, the indicators of socio-political access. It argues that the causes of poverty emanate from different perspectives and raises issues on the role of structural adjustment in aggravating and perpetuating poverty. While acknowledging that poverty cannot be eradicated, this paper therefore takes a swipe at the “modus operandi,” vis-a-vis the different strategies by which government has been responding to the different dimensions of poverty, focusing thereafter on poverty reduction through the promotion of economic growth. The paper concludes with the summary of the entire work and went further to address the issue: What can Nigeria do in the twenty-first century to reduce poverty to at least an appreciable level that will enable the achievement of sustainable economic development and high quality of life to her citizens.
