ABSTRACT
A sound, profitable and well-functioning banking system contributes to the stability of the financial system, thus, leading to the promotion of economic growth. The main focus of this study was to examine the effect of financial deepening on the profitability of deposit money banks in Nigeria for the period of 2009-2018. This is to establish how deposit money banks have contributed to the stability of the financial system and promotion of economic growth in Nigeria. This study adopted ex-post facto research design and focused on deposit money banks listed on the Nigerian stock exchange. The study employed static panel regression analysis which included use of pooled, fixed and random models. Secondary data were sourced from the published annual reports and accounts of selected deposit money banks. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed in the analysis. The findings revealed that financial deepening had both positive and significant effects on profitability variables: net interest margin (â = 7.349, p < 0 xss=removed xss=removed xss=removed>
