Abstract

To determine the financial cost of managing diabetic ketoacidosis in a resource-poor setting.

The case notes of children with type diabetes mellitus managed for DKA were manually

retrieved. The major presenting symptoms, family monthly income, cost of treatment and length of stay were analysed. Seventy five percent of the patients were of low socioeconomic class. The average duration of admission was 12.0 ± 3.3 days. The mean cost of treatment of (53,048 naira [$343.54]) was more than 200% of the average monthly family income of 125,300 naira ($163.0). The financial cost of managing diabetic ketoacidosis is burdensome to most affected families.
