Abstract

There is no doubt that the achievement of the MDG’s would consolidate the Nigerian democracy. Democracy as a form of political system could better be guaranteed if such system is sustained through holistic transformation of the sectors of the economy. This paper therefore explored avenues on how democracy as a political system could be sustained and consolidated by analysing MDG’s policy initiative within the Nigerian economy and the standard of living of the people. The paper adopted qualitative approach relying on secondary sources of information, analysed and assessed the impact of the MDG’s in all the impact of the economy. The paper adopted the political economy and the public choice approach as theoretical framework. The paper found that democracy as a system of government could only be consolidated, if and when the score card of government has shown a visible evidence of the implementations of all the programs and the transformational effect on the life of the people. The paper concluded that unless there is a corresponding improvement in the living standard of the people, democracy as a sustainable and lasting system of government will be a ruse.
