Hypertension and other Non-Communicable Diseases are becoming a global priority sequel to the burdens they pose on health, finance and economy, which further lead to a breakdown in human, institutional and national development when left uncontrolled. The African continent and developing countries are highly affected by hypertension even as predictions of increased prevalence in the coming years persist. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to understand the current hypertension prevalence, knowledge and prevention interventions available in order to alleviate the effects of hypertension and identify gaps that need to be filled for health and sustainable development to occur in Nigeria. The prevalence of hypertension varied broadly in researches, ranging from a minimum of 3.2% to a maximum of 10.1% for children and adolescents, and a minimum of 21.5% to a maximum of 78.5% for adults. The knowledge of the disease, risk behaviours and the health consequences of uncontrolled blood pressure are however found to be limited and inadequate for hypertension prevention and healthy living. Unfortunately, despite the media’s ability to influence the audience and the audience sourcing for hypertension information therein, it is observed that the Nigerian mass media have not been fully explored for the promotion of hypertension prevention, as most of the interventions available are community and nurse-led. Meanwhile, the few cases where the mass media were included in intervention programmes recorded increased hypertension awareness among the audience. Therefore, there is a need to develop more media based interventions to fill this gap.
