Abstract
The study investigated the relationship between carbon emissions and economic growth in 20 African countries which were placed into three panels strictly based on income such as low income, middle-lower income, and Middle-upper income African countries. The principal goal is to uncover the presence of an inverted U relationship in 20 African countries. The study found evidence of an inverted-U relationship between carbon emissions and economic growth in 11 countries. 5 out of 9 low-income countries, representing 55% support the ekc while 3 out of 6 middle-lower income countries support the ekc and only 1 out of 5 countries support the ekc-inverted U relationship. Thus we uncover the presence of ekc for Burundi, Liberia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Zambia DR-Congo, Cotedivour, and Gabon. We further observe that as income increases, fewer countries reach a turning point. African countries are encouraged to embrace all available technology and develop policies to reduce dependence on dirty carbon-emitting energy sources, particularly countries indicated that will increase the emissions in the future.
