Abstract
This study focused on intrinsic reward as theoretical construct for understanding how journalists in Abeokuta metropolis derive motivation for job performance. The study sought to fill gap in motivation theories espoused by Herzberg and Maslow as their extrinsic postulations for workers’ satisfaction and job performance may need further search intrinsically. The population for the study is the 127 journalists that make up the membership of Nigerian Union of Journalists in Abeokuta, while the available sample size of 115 constituted the respondents. The survey research design was adopted, using the questionnaire as instrument for data collection. The analysed data revealed that journalists were intrinsically motivated to perform optimally at assigned tasks. It further revealed that the God-factor was largely responsible for the intrinsic motivation by these journalists. The study, therefore, recommends that journalists should give their very best in the discharge of their duties and do so as service to God who is the ultimate chief accounting officer. In view of this, media owners and managers who expect productivity from their staff should treat them in such a way that they will project intrinsic reward as a priority condition for productivity and job satisfaction. The study also recommends to media scholars and researchers the need to consider the prospect of applying intrinsic reward as a theoretical construct in understanding employees’ motivation and job performance.
