Abstract

The focus of the study is on the determinant factors for choice of entertainment music in some selected radio stations in Nigeria. The concern of the study is on whether contemporary radio stations in Nigeria still consider quality and people’s preference as the paramount determinant factors in the choice of entertainment music, and the extent of their compliance with extant copyright laws and international best practice. The study adopted survey research design using in-depth interview to elicit information germane for achieving the five stated research objectives. The study population comprised the five purposively selected radio stations; Inspiration FM, Cool FM, Sound city FM, Metro FM and Radio Lagos EKO FM. The data collected were content analyzed using simple percentage frequency, and discussed in tandem with extant literature. The findings show a high level of commonalities among the study population with regard to the choice of entertainment music, recognition of existing copyright laws and adherence to contractual procedures for airplay of entertainment music in line with international best practice, payment of royalties and provision of promotional platforms for the prospective artistes/songwriters whose creative works are used. Finally, the study recommends that Radio stations in Nigeria should continue to be guided by organizational policies, tastes and preferences of the targeted audience, copyright laws, and contractual procedures in line with international best practice.
