Abstract
Every traditional society has its socio- cultural values which are both intrinsic and extrinsic. However, such values in the contemporary social setting are gradually becoming eroded, debased and desecrated by some factors such as urbanization, economic exigencies, technological exploits, as well as uncontrolled contacts with foreign cultures through globalization. Resultant effect is the gross disrespect for the hitherto sacrosanct cultural heritage of the various ethnic cultures in Nigeria as well as the increasing level of moral decadence among the ranks of the people. Traditional music among other socio-cultural practices has been able to survive and maintain its traditionalif9l despite the intimidation and intricacies of Western colonization and its attendant religious affiliations. This paper therefore investigates the roles of traditional music and its various aspects that can be developed into set of moral and social standards for enhancing and sustaining the socio-cultural values of the multifarious ethnic cultures in Nigeria.
