Abstract

Communication is an indispensable part of human experience, and it constitutes the basis for humane relationship. It engages the use of both the verbal and non verbal cues in the transmission of information. The emergence of information Communication Technology (ICT) has heightened the interdependence between different countries in the world, thus reducing it into a Global village, resulting in massive socio and economic interactions especially international levels. The gains of globalization however has not rubbed so much on rural communities that constitute about 70% of the population of most developing countries . Illiteracy resulting from poverty pandemic has been identified as one of major causes and this has made the use of ICT a near impossibility within the rural setting. Apart from this, rural dwellers in Africa rely mostly on indigenous communications system (ICS), based and functional within the various ethic cultures. The purpose of this paper is to situate the relevance of indigenous communication system (ICS) in the scheme of information communication Technology (ICT) and how synergy can be incorporated into national and international advancement.
