Abstract
This study examined the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) and energy consumption on
environmental degradation in Nigeria. The Johansen co-integration technique was applied.
The short-run result indicates that foreign direct investment can be effective in improving
the quality of the environment. On the other hand, energy consumption and gross domestic
product (GDP) leads to an increase in the degradation of the environment in Nigeria. There is
a need for strong environmental laws and strict implementation of these laws to ensure that
foreign direct investments to Nigeria are directed into clean energy and non-polluting
projects or technology to improve the quality of the environment.
