Several health financing literature notes that differences in SES is a major determinant of household capacity to pay for health care and a major deterrent in consumption of needed health resources. The study therefore examined how households’ SES influences their capacity to pay for healthcare in Nigeria and the SES that determines household capacity to pay for health resources. Using descriptive analysis and multiple logistic regression, the study found that level of income, place of residence, educational level of household head, household size and sex of household head were significant determinants of household capacity to pay for needed health care. The study recommended that it is imperative for the Nigerian government to put in place a workable health insurance scheme that will cover particularly the poor in the rural areas and informal sectors in the country to help boost their CtP for health care. The study also recommended that basic education should be made mandatory in the country even at the adult level to grant people access to better paying jobs and access to needed information on how to pursue better health. In addition, a policy could be enacted to encourage or mandate small family sizes while widows and single mothers could be sought and assisted since they seemed worse-off with regards to possessing CtP for health services.
