Abstract
The second half of the twentieth century has witnessed a phenomenal upsurge in the demand for tertiary education. The number of students in pursuit of tertiary education has risen substantially across the developed and developing economies. This growth in demand is being accommodated by rapidly expanding educational system in developed and developing economies. Nigeria as a developing economy has brought in private sector initiative to her university educational system in a bid to increase supply of university education and as such accommodating the phenomenal increase in the students demand for university education. Among the first generation private universities given license in 1999 was Babcock University. Babcock University has 753 students enrolled for her academic programmes in 1999 and this has increased substantially over the years. This paper estimated a conventional demand model for university education in Babcock University using enrolment behavior based on time series data. The results from the estimated conventional demand model for undergraduate programmes from 1999 to 2010 using the OLS method reveals a significant income elasticity coefficient of 0.734 and positive tuition elasticity coefficient of 0.314 (significant at 10 percent). The findings show that demand for undergraduate programmes in BU is however sensitive to income but not sensitive to tuition fee.
