Abstract
The study investigated related psycholinguistic challenges faced in the acquisition and learning of English language and to ascertain the students’ perceptions toward the effective teaching of English as a second language. The paper adopted the descriptive survey research design and the population consisted of two secondary schools randomly selected from Orsu local Government area of Imo state. A sample for the study is made of 200 students consisting of 100 students from each of the selected secondary schools. Simple random sample technique was used in selecting the 200 respondents. A Questionnaire that consist of 15 closed-ended questions in 2 sections was administered for data and the responses were collated and descriptively analysed using Cronbach Alpha technique which established the reliability coefficient at 0.80. Findings showed that language acquisition is slightly different from learning though both are sometimes used interchangeably. A high percentage of the students had extreme anxiety in the process of learning English language as students agreed that their local dialect is not affected by English Language learning. The paper therefore concludes that there is no significant difference in the attitude of students in the learning of English language between the two selected secondary schools. Therefore, teachers’ methodology is a factor that significantly impacted the acquisition and learning of English language.
