One cannot categorically say how human speech originated. The development of speech follows a natural process which can be termed as an innate behavior. Innate, in the sense that speaking ability is an attribute of God. Language has a divine origin which is traceable to creation where we see God speaking and later when Adam was created, God breathed into him a living breath and He became a living soul. “Let us make man in our own image, after our likeness…” (Genesis 1:26).
The first speech sound made by man that was ever heard was the speech sound produced by Adam in the garden of Eden when he said “ this is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man” (Genesis 2:23). With the forgoing, one can infer that both speech sound and the mechanism of speech sound production is a product of nature. Owing to the fact that there is no record that Adam went through any training process of speech production, it therefore means that speaking is an attribute of God deposited in man at creation.
When man speaks, air comes out through the lungs and this is interfered or interfaced at various places for the production of speech sounds. The organs which take part in the production of speech sounds are referred to as the organs of speech.
