Abstract
Leprosy has continually remained a public health problem despite international efforts aimed at reducing its burden, with an annual three thousand five hundred new cases, leprosy remains a national concern in Nigeria. Hence, the study examined the level of knowledge, attitude and barriers to utilizing leprosy clinic.The study utilized a descriptive survey study design with 479 respondents were selected using purposive sampling technique. A validated questionnaire was adopted for data collection, coded data collected was analysed with the use of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 20.0. Results were generated and presented in descriptive statistics (frequency, tables, and charts).Result from the study revealed that the mean age of respondent 41.73±1.09,Mean Score for knowledge and Attitude towards utilization of leprosy clinic is 8.5±2.75 and 8.8±3.84 respectively.89% respondents have heard of leprosy, 60.6% agreed it’s caused by bacterium Mycobacterium leprae, 56.2% attested to skin lesion as a major symptom, 41.2?lieved it has no cure, 43.7% expressed leprosy to be punishment from the gods, and 48.9% stated that health workers stigmatize against leprosy patients. Further, 44.8% respondents wouldn’t reveal their status; 67.8?vise relative to seek treatment in health facilityor a health worker.The study concludes that, though, Community Members were knowledgeable of the utilization of Leprosy clinic, their attitudinal knowledge towards the utilization of Leprosy clinic was good but secondary data points to no or low utilization of the health facility. The study recommends improvement in community engagement, scaling up awareness to aid translating the knowledge into useful action on the causes and spread of leprosy and health facility utilization.
