Abstract
Self-determination is the legal right of people to choose their own purpose in the international order. The major constraint of self-determination is while it is seen as an inspiration for hope for the oppressed in the society on one hand, it is viewed as an instrument which stimulate instability and disorder on the other hand, and therefore disrupts the sovereignty of such a State. Professor Cassese concurs with this when he stated that “self -determination is attractive so long as it has not been attained; alternatively, it is attractive so long as it is applied to others.
Self-determination is considered a double edged sword because of its dual nature; it is a fundamental right of a particular group of people to find their own nation, determine their political affiliation and pursue their economic, social and cultural development.
