Abstract
Migration from Africa has arguably been conceived as a consequence of poverty, unemployment, insecurity, ethnic and religious conflicts, lack of opportunities, regional or boundary crisis among others. Aside the security dimensions, migration has other implications for peace and development in Africa. This study aimed at investigating the implications of migration on cultural development in Africa. The study adopted a qualitative research approach, generating data from relevant secondary sources of journal articles, book chapters and internet materials that were subjected to critical content analysis. The study found that Africans migrate to countries that have considerable similarities to the African cultural background; and that migration from Africa to other parts of the world has resulted in increased exportation, integration and assimilation of African culture beyond the shores of the continent. It concluded that beyond the strain on resources of recipient states, the potentials for xenophobia and other security implications, migration possesses positive implications for the development and diffusion of African culture beyond the African continent. The study recommended that governments should encourage systematic migration of Africans outside the continent, especially to other countries with cultural practices similar to Africa. Also, African governments should invest in tourism so as to promote African culture among migrants into the continent.
