Abstract

Abstract: Adolescents are vulnerable to negative outcomes of sexual-risk behaviours because of their curiosity and impulsivity. The ability to communicate with one’s sexual partner about condom use will build adolescents’ intention to practice safe sexual behaviours (SSB). The main objective was to determine the relationship between self-esteem and assertiveness with intention to practice safe sexual behaviours. One hundred and forty-four in-school adolescents from public senior secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Design was descriptive cross-sectional, selecting four schools through a multi-stage sampling technique from four (4) semi-urban local government areas of the city. A validated instrument was used to collect data on sexual experience, self-esteem, assertiveness and intention to practice SSB. Frequencies, descriptive statistics, correlation and regression were conducted using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Ethical considerations were ensured. The mean±SD age of the adolescents was 15.94±1.57; 74 (51.4%) were males and 70 (48.6%), females. Self-esteem, assertiveness and intention to practice SSB which were measured on 30-point, 52-point and 24-point rating scales had mean±SD scores of 16.22±3.209, 29.97±7.653 and 15.98±3.709 respectively. Self-esteem had a significant relationship with the intention to practice SSB but only predicted 4.1% of the variation in intention to practice SSB (r = 0.202; r2 = 0.041; p = 0.015). Gender and assertiveness did not predict the intention to practice SSB. The ability to communicate with one’s sexual partner about condom use will build adolescents’ intention to practice safe sexual behaviours.
