Ethno-religious Conflicts as a Bane of Business Fortunes in Nigeria

Abstract
Nigeria, a country of over 150 million people and over 400 ethnic groups distributed among two major religious of Christianity and Islam, offers a veritable case study of ethno-religious conflicts. Against this background, the specific objectives of this paper are: to analyze the causes of ethno-religious crisis in Nigeria since 1980 when the nation witnessed the first of such conflicts in Kano; to appraise the extent of how such conflicts affected the Nigerian business and the economic climate for the past 31 years; offer policy recommendations to curtail the scourge. Compared to previous researches, this study breaks new ground by evaluating the long term effects of the several ethno-religious crisis in Nigeria with their attendant business and socio-economic costs. This study used mainly secondary data obtained from newspapers and magazines as well as previous studies in learned journals in related fields. The findings revealed that among some of the causes of these conflicts, which incidentally are not peculiar to Nigeria, are: ignorance, a by-product of non-exposure in western education in certain parts of the country, religious intolerance, allegations of perceived neglect and marginalization by some sections of the country, as well as poverty. The paper finally gave some recommendations foe curtailing the phenomenon of ethno-religious crisis within the Nigerian .nation.
