Abstract

Bipolar disorder is frequent mood swings which manifest in high and low moods, known as mania and depression, which differ from the typical ups and downs most people experience. The specific objectives of this study were to assess the knowledge and perception of bipolar disorder among the undergraduate students of Babcock University. The study adopted the descriptive cross-sectional survey design involving a total of 385 participants. The study adopted a purposive sampling method in which undergraduate students in the University were used for the study. Self-developed structured questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection from the 385 participants which were randomly selected for the study. Findings from the study deduced that the undergraduates that participated in this study were knowledgeable about bipolar disorder because majority (60.2%) agree to have knowledge about bipolar disorder which was reflected when (62.6%) were able to identify mania as a form of this mental illness. On perception of bipolar disorder, it could be said that the undergraduates had a clear understanding of the illness because majority 76.0% perceive bipolar disorder as a mental illness and 57.4% sees people living with this disorder are being stigmatized. The study therefore recommended that institutions direct efforts towards the dissemination of clear and updated information about bipolar disorders within the students’ curriculum as a better understanding of mental illness would significantly improve knowledge and attitude towards mentally ill persons.
