Abstract
This chapter of a book is meant to help social workers to understand how theory impacts and informs social work practice. Understanding how theory informs social work is an area that social workers can find challenging and complex. Having an in-depth knowledge of theories will hopefully help social workers to have a greater sensitivity to the need of service-users, as well as stop them from taking anything at the face value. The chapter will further equip social workers with the skill to always probe. To intervene effectively, social workers need to make sense of their clients and situations. Using theory approach provides a framework to formulate assessment that are clear and directly related to the problems clients present. It forms the foundation for selection of intervention strategies and methods to achieve change. Also, Models and Perspective examples are built into the text to aid learning and reflective thinking.
