). Relationship between three contextual factors and moral behaviours of students in South-western tertiary institutions: A call for counselling intervention.
This study investigated the extent to which moral behaviours of students in tertiary institutions is
associated with exposure to social media usage, neighbourhood influence and religiosity using survey
design. One thousand six hundred and thirty-four representative sample (Male=867; Female=767) with
age range of 18-29 and mean age of 17.04 were drawn through multi-stage technique from a
population of tertiary institutions students in South-Western Nigeria. Five research questions guided
the study. Variables were assessed with four standardized self-report scales. Result of Pearson Product
Moment Correlation (PPMC) showed that while neighbourhood and religiosity have positive
relationship with moral behaviours, social media usage had inverse relationship. Multivariate Analysis
showed that jointly the independent variables accounted for 17% variance on the respondents’ moral
behaviours. Religiosity made the most potent contribution ((? = .398; t= 8.706; P<0>
neighbourhood influence ((? =.167; t= 2.082; P<0>
contribution to respondents’ moral behaviours. It concluded that counselling psychologists should
empower parents with skills to inculcate cherished values and mores on their youths. Moral education
should be included in tertiary institutions’ curriculum.
