Abstract
Two main issues call for clarification in the attempt to understand the depth of Jesus' dialogue with the Sadducees in Matt 22:23-33. First, there is an apparent uncertainty regarding what the main focus of the dialogue is: marriage, resurrection, or both. Second, the syntactical meaning of en te anastasei, an expression used by the Sadducees and Jesus, is both indispensable from and enigmatic to the understanding of the dialogue. This expression could mean "on the resurrection," "at the resurrection," "after the resurrection," "during the resurrection," or "in the resurrection," depending on the context and preferred syntax. Therefore, there is the dire need to identify the central thrust of the dialogue as well as clarify the most appropriate syntactical meaning and theological implications of the expression en te anastasei, especially from the perspective of the overall context of the dialogue in Matt 22:23-33. While this paper does not purport to provide answers to all the questions involved in this enigmatic pericope, its main purpose is to identify the main focus of the dialogue and determine the appropriate syntactical and theological meaning of en te anastasei, especially from the overall context of the dialogue between theSadducees and Jesus in Matt 22:23-33. In addition, this paper seeks to discuss the theological implications of the meaning of the issues raised above within the context of the pericope.
