Abstract
The interpretation of the parable of the landowner and his labourers in the vineyard in Matthew 20: 1-16 continues to intrigue biblical scholars. The points of intrigue range from the variety of interpretations given to the parable, the apparent unfairness exhibited by the land owner, as perceived by the labourers who were hired early in the day, and especially the contemporary relevance of the concept of the agora in the parable. The ambiguity over the relevance of the concept of the agora in the parable becomes pertinent in view of the disparity between the setting in life in the first century A. D. when Jesus told the parable that the setting in life in the present digital, cyber, and hi-tech age which threatens to reduce the agora concept to oblivion. In response to these and more, this paper seeks to explore the exegesis and interpretation of the parable of the labourers in the vineyard. It also pays close attention to the agora concept, especially from the African perspective with a view to ascertaining the extent to which the setting in life in Africa vis-a-vis the African agora concept provides ample basis for interpreting and understanding the parable.
