Abstract

The original source and authenticity of the story of the woman caught in adultery in John 7:53-8:11 are largely debated among Biblical scholars. The debate centres extensively on the Johannine origin of the story, whether or not the pericope actually belongs to Johns autograph of his Gospel. In the light of the historical, theological, doctrinal, and homiletical values of this pericope, certain questions arise concerning the original source of this story, its omission in virtually all the ancient and reliable manuscripts of the Johannine Gospel, the authenticity of this story, and its relevance to Christians today. Largely utilizing textual analysis (based on internal and external evidences), this study therefore intends to ascertain, as much as possible, the original source of this story, discover why it is omitted in the ancient and reliable manuscripts, and ascertain the authenticity of this story and its usefulness to Christians today. The study reveals that there is no conclusive evidence to either accept or deny the Johannine origin of the pericope, since even the most ancient manuscript that is extant cannot be traced directly to John’s autograph.
