Abstract

Due to the covenant language that pervades the epistle, he is presented three times in the epistle (8:6; 9:15; 12:24) as performing the function of a mesites, a word that has been consistently translated as "mediator" in a majority of the English translations of the New Testament. The nuances of mediator call for clarification on what the intended meaning and significance of mesites are in the Epistle to the Hebrews, especially 9:15. Therefore, this study seeks to clarify these. Heb 9:15 is given special attention in this study because a cursory reading of the entire epistle reveals that 9:15 discusses at length how Jesus became a mesites and the resultant effect more than the others. It is crucial to study the meaning of and significance of the use of mesites in Heb 9:15 since words generally lose, if not change meanings as they move from one language to another. This will enhance the understanding of the depth of the message the writer of Hebrews is communicating to his readers, which otherwise may be masked or distorted by translation. The study concluded that mesites is better explained (as the one who puts the covenant terms into effect and guarantees the parties involved in the covenant by sacrificing himself/herself) than translated.
