Abstract
Education of the girl child in Africa has undergone significant development in many parts of Africa. Women movements coupled with feminism, womanism among other concepts have also impacted not just on the educational status of women, but their self-perception and empowerment. This development has far reaching implication and effects on marriages, family and women's status in Africa. Adopting feminism and womanism as theoretical frameworks, this paper examines female characters in the novel, Changes by Ama Ata Aidoo. The paper interrogates the effects of the aquisition of higher education on the self-perception, with empowerment and decisions of the female characters with regard to their marriage, family and household. The study advocates acquisition of higher education by women in Africa but proposes cautions about the negative implications for marriages and family.
