Abstract
The current two terms of four years each adopted at the wake of the adoption of the presidential system in 1979 has recently come under serious criticisms. The two terms has been criticize for being responsible for the high level of corruption in the polity, orchestrated political instability, and exacerbated intra and inter party crises, responsible for the spate of political assassinations and high frequency of impeachment. These negative sides are believed to have impacted negatively on good governance. Hence, a call for a change to one single term of six years. This proposition is expected to have positive impact not only on the political systems but also capable of ensuring good governance and consequently promoting development. However, while this paper shares the above position on the single term, it cautions that the difference between the two and single terms may be discovered to be between six and a half of dozen. This is because the same actors are the players and therefore, little or no differences may be achieved between the single and two tenures. The paper presents argument for and against the adoption of both single and two terms tenures, however prefers single terms. The paper relies on both primary and secondary sources of data. It concludes that in order to strengthen single tenure, Nigerians must be educated about the power of recall as against the impeachment of public officers now rampant. This portrays Nigeria in bad light among the country of nations.
