Abstract
The reality of governance is that no government can provide all amenities required by the people in terms of developmental projects. This is not even possible in developed democracies. Hence, the need for self development initiatives to supplement and complement developmental efforts of the government. Thus, this paper examines community development association initiatives as people’s institution specifically designed to stimulate and promote self-help developmental activities at community level. The paper adopts development theoretical framework and multiple methodologies such as survey, in-depth interviews, focus group discussion to investigate the problem selected for study. The paper discovers that CDA is a grassroot developmental strategy with laudable objectives to encourage self-development through people initiatives. However, it concluded that the developmental strategy is facing some challenges as they are being faced by problems encountered by previous strategies. These are planning and implementation, corruption and political infiltration, ignorance and illiteracy, corruption and problems of dedication and commitment on the parts of both leadership and followership. It recommends political neutrality among members, dynamic, selfless and committed leadership and enlightenment programmes. The associations also need to engage the services of experts in project planning, execution and review.
