Abstract
Global efforts to eradicate girl trafficking in Nigeria has met with minimum success because some indigenous aspects of the menace have not been satisfactorily addressed, therefore there is a need to further investigate cultural factors promoting the trade. In addition, the continuity of the problem necessitates additional approaches. This research suggests the use of relevant literature as one of the tools for eliminating girl trafficking in Nigeria.
This chapter explores the effectiveness of literature in combating Trafficking. The study investigates what attitudinal changes as regards issues of traveling abroad on juicy unsaubstanciated promises occur in readers after reading Trafficked by Akachi Eziegbo. It further interrogates cultural factors which evolved and and sustained trafficking in Nigeria, especially in Edo state.
This research attempts to investigate other soico-cultural practices and parents'role in the promotion of girl trafficking in Nigeria and Edo State where the practice is endemic. The research utilizes Ezeigbo's Trafficked, a novel, as a means of educating the Nigerian youth on the dangers of human trafficking particularly acheived through juicy unsubstanciated promised of living abroad. It also provides statistical data on reader response to the novel and demonstrates the tangible impact of literature on the lives of people in the African society. Finally the chapter explores how creative works can be more pragmatic and exploited to eradicate negative cultural practices and promote positive development in Africa.
