Abstract
Lowe lowe laalulu ogidigbo
Ologbon ni joo...omoran nii sii moo
The ogidigbo drum is beaten in Proverbs
Only the wise can weave its dance
Only the knowledgeable can decode its meaning
The Yoruba talking drum is a veritable medium of conveying proverbs. This paper carries out a literary-semiotic analysis of a drum performance of proverbial and idiomatic expressions. It posits that drum proverbs differ significantly in structure from proverbs used in actual speech. The paper also explores the devices, which drummers exploit to transform proverbs into melodious drum lore. It equally suggests innovative ways in which drum proverbs can be utilized for greater relevance in the contemporary world.
