Abstract
This study attempts to investigate characterization patterns of male and female charcters in recent Nigerian female writings. It observes that as a reaction to the potrayal of wak and docile female charcaterization in early African writings by male authors, female writers engaegd in over-glorification of female characters and a demonization of male characters. However in more recent writings, particularly the works under study, the trend is being modified in favor of a more realistic and authentic depiction of both male and female characters. The novels depict strengths and waknesses of both the male and female characters. Nevertheless, female writers still reveal a predilection towards female characters by foregrounding the strengths of their female characters over their weaknesses. In addition, most of the male characters are not strongly developed like their female counterparts even though they are not conciously demonized.
The study concludes that although gender politics play significant role in shaping male and female characterization in the works under study, the authors have succeded in giving readers a more credible and acceptable picture of both male and female characters.
