Abstract
In a globalized world characterized by increased competition and a world-wide recession resulting in negative growth and economic upheavals, the typical job description is fast giving way to more innovative expectations from corporations the overall effect of which has brought about a major alteration in the typical corporation’s relationship with employees, shareholders, communities, government, and society. The paper aims at dissecting today’s job description in a world that can be said to be in a constant state of reengineering. A review of literature reveals a shift from specialized to enlarged jobs over the years; the concept of ‘dejobbing’ crept into emphasize strong team-playing skill as well as working in a relatively small team environment. The paper stresses the need for modern day corporations to be abreast of trends within their respective industries like product and technological changes, global competition, deregulation, political instability, demographic changes, etc. The combined effects of these have helped weaken the meaning of job as a well-defined and property delineated set of responsibilities by employing four tools viz Flatter organization, work Teams, The Boundaryless organization and Reengineering. The paper concludes by examining a vacancy advert in the Quality Assurance unit of Babcock University, which demonstrates the future of job description with a clear shift from the traditional straight jacket, specialist mode to a more dynamic, team-centered, results-oriented operation.
