Abstract
Going by Federal Government-sponsored media blitz and the recurring shortages of petroleum products coupled with attendant high prices thereof, deregulation of the downstream sector of the Nigerian petroleum industry is just a matter of time. This paper attempts to predict the outcome of a full deregulation of the downstream sector of the nation’s petroleum industry whenever it comes on steam. In predicting the outcome of deregulation on the economy and the citizenry countries, as well as the positions of major stakeholders in the oil industry, viz. the Nigerian Labour Congress, Government and some notable individuals. Some conditions that should be met in order to ameliorate the effects of the deregulation exercise on the citizenry are also discussed in the paper.
