Abstract
Apart from Management by Objectives (MbO) and Team Building, another, approach employed to unravel the various problems associated with the operations of an organization in its bid to achieve organizational excellence is Total Quality Management (TQM). The paper identifies elements of TQM which include inter alia: focusing on the organization s business process, encouraging every manager's and employee's participation and striving for continuous improvement. The paper reviews works of notable authorities on TQM including W. Edward Fleming whose holistic approach to management expands into 14 management principles that revolve around team work, relations with suppliers, multi-disciplinary problem solving and casting the manager as a co-ordinator and coach. Other notable attributes of TQM are increased training, open organization, employee empowerment, zero-defects mentality and reduced waste and cycle times in all areas, through cross-departmental process analysis. As a way of integrating TQM into the strategy of the business, the paper highlights an order of steps which develops a self-reinforcing cycle of commitment, communication and culture change. Summarizing, the paper notes that today's corporate world is a highly competitive one and smart companies are gaining market inroads by directing competitive action to the weaknesses of rivals. Sadly, TQM still does not have a firm foothold in Nigeria. Customers are still taken for granted, much exploitation abounds and quality is largely poor. With the world becoming a global village, Nigerian companies need a drastic change of orientation and approach to the market in order to build a sustainable competitive advantage.
