Abstract
This research work sought to determine the key issues surrounding record management practices in the public secondary schools in Ikeja local government of Lagos State, Nigeria. The population consisted of 325 teachers and 35 administrative staff. Data collected was done through observation and questionnaire.
Even though the result of this research indicated that the staff were aware of the general record management practices, they were yet to fully embrace modern techniques and practices. This resulted in lack of knowledge of staff concerning proper preservation of records and also the lack of essential apparatus for records’ preservation. In order to reverse the case, it is recommended that the government should employ professionals for the management of public secondary schools’ records. It is also recommended that the schools should initiate an extensive training program for teachers as they handle so many schools’ records. There is also need for the provision of metal shelves and cabinets for proper management and preservation of records. The public secondary schools in Ikeja local government may indeed attain a giant leap in records management if efforts are made in this direction.
