Abstract
The study was conducted to evaluate the performance of savannah-adapted maize hybrids during drought stress during off-season. Fourteen maize hybrids characterized as old, intermediate and new were evaluated under two water regimes (well-watered and water deficit) during the dry season of December 2002 – April 2003. Data were collected on some agronomic traits of the crop. Seedling screening was also carried out on six of the fourteen maize hybrids. The results revealed that total biomass production of all the maize genotypes increased progressively from mid-silking and grain-filling to harvest periods under optimal moisture conditions. New hybrid maize varieties however had highest total biomass production at grain-filling and final harvest periods under water-deficit conditions compared to old and intermediate hybrids.
