Abstract
Ethnicity and religion play key roles in Nigeria’s political economic and social development as well as in Africa and many other countries of the religion on one hand remains a major cause of growing politic crisis in Nigeria, ethnicity on the other hand undermines the selection of responsible and responsive national leadership in the country. Many Nigeria leaders are recruited on the basis of their ethnicity or religious affiliation rather than experience, expertise, vision and intelligence. Hence, Nigeria’s political and economic performances fall short in comparison with other countries of comparable size and resources. This paper examines the link between ethnicity and religion and governance and tries to identify the plaguing effect of ethnicity and religion on governance in Africa in general and Nigeria in particular, despite the huge human and material resources the continent of Africa is endowed with. The paper opined that Nigeria ought to have gone far in advancement while her citizens enjoy better life but for the negative effects of ethno-religions influence on governance African continent continues to lag behind in the achievement of the Millennium Development Coals target and poverty remains endemic even in the 21st century. The paper also underscores the imperative of indigenous solutions to thy multifarious African problems among other suggested ways out of the challenge of Nigeria.
