Abstract
The resurgence of direct violence (2000-2008) in Saare/Tsaragi communities, Kwara State, Nigeria that had cohabited peacefully from 1808 - 2000 when boundary dispute emerged with the creation of local government in 1976 revealed a defective healing process. The study interrogated forgiveness, concession and trust in peace-building among others. The study was descriptive, relied on primary and secondary data sources. The survey covered 400 respondents drawn from Saare/Tsaragi communities by combining stratified and simple random sampling techniques. It found that 77% suffered injury, 74.5% were willing to forgive, 83.3% were ready to grant concession, while 32% trusted the conflicting party. The specific implication of the study is that ‘trust’ constituted the greatest challenge in peace building while the conflict could still be transformed. The study recommended that the intervening agencies must develop stronger political will to engage the issues of conflict and make the peace process inclusive to overcome trust deficits.
