Abstract
Abstract:
Africa, a continent inseparable with culture, making her traditional rulers occupied positions of honours, managing conflict and maintaining peace and orders in their localities. Such leaders are expected to be politically neutral, and serve as mouthpiece of gods and the oracles. This paper therefore examined electoral disputes and the role of traditional rulers in settling these disputes in Oyo state. Descriptive survey design has been used to examine the involvement of traditional rulers in the management of party disputes in Oyo State. Oyo State was chosen because of the significant role it occupies in western region; Ibadan the capital city of Oyo is seen as the political hub of western Nigeria, a region that experienced the first state of emergency in the Nigerian political history. The population consisted of all the politicians and traditional rulers in Oyo state. Purposive sampling techniques were adopted to select 7 paramount rulers, while quota sampling techniques were used to select 300 politicians from the three major political parties in the state (APC, PDP and Labour Party). Data were collected using self-structured questionnaire and unstructured interview guide. Findings revealed that traditional rulers play major role in politics of Oyo state, and this had led to successful resolution of political disputes in the state. It was also found that, there were clash of power and authority between traditional rulers and some political office holders. However, this study recommends that traditional rulers should refrain from politicking, to protect the dignity and reverence accorded the esteem position, and confidence reposed in the institution.
