Abstract
ABSTRACT:
In general, African traditional rulers have occupied positions of prominence in conflict management. They are regarded as father of all and expected to be politically neutral to justify the respect accorded the institution. This study has investigated the involvement of traditional rulers in political disputes in South-Western states of Nigeria. Descriptive survey design has been used to examine the relevance of traditional rulers in the management of contemporary intra-party disputes in selected states of Nigeria. The population consists of all the politicians and traditional rulers in the selected states. Purposive sampling techniques were adopted to select 14 traditional rulers, while quota sampling techniques was used to select 600 politicians from the three major political parties in Nigeria (APC, PDP, LP.) The data was collected using self-structured questionnaire and interview. Triangulatory method of data analysis was used to analyse the data. Findings revealed that involvement of traditional rulers in politics has led to successful resolution of political disputes in the selected states under study. It was also found that, there were crises of confidence between traditional rulers and some politicians in those states. Therefore, this study recommends that traditional rulers should protect the dignity and reverence accorded to the esteem and confidence reposed in their exalted position.
