Abstract
The inability of governments in Africa to arrest the increasing wave of ethno-communal conflicts in the face of monumental loss of lives and property is a serious constraint to rapid socio-economic transformation. This informed the study to evaluate of the mechanisms adopted in managing such conflicts and recommend ways of achieving lasting peace. It was a descriptive study that combined primary and secondary sources of data collection using Saare/Tsaragi communities in Kwara State, Nigeria as a case study. The sampling method was purposive and data were organised as tables while the method of analysis was qualitative and quantitative. The study discovered that the traditional models of conflict management failed and the government interventions have not achieved desired result. Pacification rather than transformation method was adopted while government lacked political will to confront the issues of the conflict. The study recommends that managing boundary dispute is beyond the unilateral action of the State government without compliance with Section 7 and 8 of the 1999 Constitution. Also, the peace process should adopt bottom-up approach as it is the people that make peace, while wider coverage of the peace process to accommodate the significant majority that were left out is essential. Lastly, the study recommends the combination of traditional and western models of conflict transformation to achieve lasting peace. This will enhance the process of granting concession, trust and forgiveness.
