Abstract
With the increasing competition among higher education institutions, more attention is on how to increase student retention rates and the number of degree completion. Also, there is a growing interest and concern in many countries about the problem of school failure and the determination of its main contributing factors. Many tertiary institutions have implemented innovative information systems and services to support tertiary academic management processes. So far, there are limited numbers of research; which examine the influence of family factors on first year academic performance in tertiary institutions using machine learning algorithms. This research focus on designing a predictive/recommender system framework to serve as a basis for predicting the performance of students at the end of their first year in tertiary institution based on their family background factors and previous academic achievements using machine learning algorithms.
