Abstract
Democracy in Nigeria ha d experienced series of challenges since the return ' civil rule in 1999. These challenges include the imposition of candidates, God-fatherism, money politics and injustice, lack of parry ideology, and party indiscipline, among others. The absence of internal democracy among the Nigerian political parties has constituted a major threat to democratic consolidation in the country. This problem has led to party defection, otherwise known as crosscarpeting, party switching, floor-crossing, party hopping, decamping and party jumping, and even conflicts (both intra and inter) these features have remained a permanent feature in Nigeria's democracy. This chapter therefore investigated the reasons the main opposition party in Nigeria (ACN/APC) find it difficult to practice internal democracy despite the fact that they claim to be the alternative party able to provide something better for the country.
