Abstract
Efforts at maintaining peaceful co-existence in Africa in general and Nigeria in particular predate colonialism. It also survives it. Hence, there have been traditional approaches to both crises management and resolution in pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial Nigeria. Therefore in modern times, the. legalistic measures of resolving crises are not substitute but complementary to local mechanisms. This is to say that modern institutional mechanisms introduced for crisis resolution in Africa with emphasis on Nigeria has not dimmed the traditional methodology introduced and sustained by our traditional institutions. This paper, therefore, traces and examines not only the role of traditional institutions in conflict resolution but also its potency in the face of modern institutional measures between the Yorubas and the Igbos in Nigeria. The example from Yoruba land is drawn from the Ijesas in Osun State while the example from Igbo land is drawn from Emekuku, Owerri in Imo State. This study also compares the traditional peace keeping mechanism between the two societies. Again, it compares the traditional and modern mechanisms for peace making in the two societies with a view to attaching values to them in terms of sustaining long lasting peaceful coexistence. The paper therefore, arrives at a conclusion on the traditional and modern initiatives at peace keeping with informed recommendations. To achieve the objective, the study adopts both documentary and in-depth interview methodology to collect data
