Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorder emerged as a concern for Public Health Professionals due to the rise in its prevalence over the decades. Nigeria has an increase in the prevalence of autism and there is underutilization of mental health services as regards autism. There are factors leading to the underutilization of mental health services. These factors may include knowledge, attitude or perception about the disorder. This research seeks to access the knowledge, attitude and perception towards Autism Spectrum Disorder among religious organizations in Ikeja Local Government Area, Lagos State. This study used a cross-sectional descriptive survey design. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used to recruit the three hundred and six parents (306) members of different religious organizations in Ikeja Local Government Area, Lagos State. Data were collected using self-developed instruments. Five research questions were raised to guide this study, while data were analyzed using of frequency counts, means, standard deviation, and Multiple Regression Analysis significant at 0.05 alpha level. Results indicated that Most of the participants 161 (52.6%) of the participants had moderate knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder, 56.5% had indifference attitude while the perception towards autism spectrum disorder by various members of the different participating church was fair (44.84%). Also, it was revealed that 13.7% of the total variance in the respondents' attitude towards autism is accounted for by the knowledge (F (1,306) = 48.260; P = .000), and 14.9% of the total variance in the respondents' perception towards autism is accounted for by the knowledge (F (1,306) = 53.328; P = .000). The study concluded that issues with physically challenged children remains a challenge to most countries, while protecting the rights of children with physically challenged requires us to see the whole child not just the disability in terms of our knowledge, attitude, and perceptions towards the challenge. The present study therefore provides evidence of a salient relationship between the people's knowledge, attitude, and perceptions towards the autistic children.
