Abstract

This study assessed the prevalence of bipolar disorder among undergraduate students of Babcock University in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State. The study adopted the descriptive cross-sectional survey design involving a total of 385 participants. The study adopted a purposive sampling method in which undergraduate students in the University were used for the study. Self-developed structured questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection from the 385 participants which were randomly selected for the study. From the study it was deduced that the overall prevalence of bipolar disorder among the undergraduate students was 69.9% thus it could be said that the extent which the undergraduates experience bipolar disorder is about 70%. It could then be said that the undergraduates that participated in this study experienced one form of bipolar disorder or the other. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that there is need for academic curriculum to be flexible in order to reduce stress as this is one of the causes of bipolar disorder. Screening of bipolar disorder should be a prerequisite during students’ admission into higher institution in order to reduce suicidal incidences among these populations.
